Water

Found this awesome website with suggestions and products for making fake water. Amazing!

Check it out here.

Materials Research

We are getting down to the wire with only four weeks left to finish this project and make it gallery ready. I have been researching materials for the artificial water and cracked clay for the puzzle boards. I am thinking of using a resin or epoxy for the water since it is durable, fairly easy to use (as far as I can gather) and not too expensive, and for the obvious reason, it looks somewhat like water. I am still unsure about the clay situation. I may be able to get my hands on a bucket of clay from a site property, but since the ground is frozen it may be difficult. If this doesn't work, pottery clay of some sort may have to be used and perhaps some type of faux finish or process can be done to make the clay look cracked. I am going to drop in to Curry's tomorrow and check out my options.
This is what we would typically want the clay to look like:

The resin looks like water, example of it in a beaker:

Craig went to the wood shop yesterday and hopefully I will be able to get some definite dimensions soon.

Back to reality

Rose and I just got back from LA (reading week) and today was our first day back to class. Over the break we had done some brainstorming because we thought our project was lacking something, and we thought we hit the jackpot. Until today. But it wasn't bad at all, Dave reassured us that we were on the right track and go full speed ahead with the project. The prototype is due next week, and I think we'll be okay... which is kind of a relief. I'm sure that notion will change in about 5 days.

Here is a really quick sketch we did while brainstorming, although, not what we are going to be doing:

Research Presentation & Maquette

Yesterday our group had our research presentation in Kathleen's class. Our 10 minute presentation turned into 45 minutes, which didn't seem to be a bad thing. We answered a lot of questions and our project really seemed to be coming together. Until today. We had to present our idea and maquette in Steve & Dave's class, and we totally want to rethink our project. We are discussing new possibilities and additions to the project, as well as material possibilities. This is going to be a huge challenge.

Expo '08 Zaragoza

One of our inspirations for this project:

Tomorrow our group will be meeting to rehearse our research presentation and iron out any and all details of this project. Once that is complete, we can go full steam towards building and perfecting. The clock is ticking.

Schematics

Here are some pictures from Craig's branch of the installation, his part of the installation consists of "puzzle" interactivity.

Seems like we are still keeping you guessing as to what our project is. That's fine, you will find out what it is soon!

Not the beginning...

So we are currently in the works of creating an installation for the OCAD/Ryerson Imperial Measures show. We have been working on it for a few weeks now, but this is the first of many posts. About 2 weeks ago Cam, Rose and I met with Craig and brainstormed ideas. Today we totally rearranged our thoughts and had a breakthrough. It is still in the beginning stages so more information and details will be posted this week. Think water. Think work. Think movement. Think outside the basin.
